Fees & funding

Pay what you can genuinely afford

We believe financial hardship should never be a barrier to getting support. Our sliding scale means everyone pays a fair amount for their circumstances.

How our fees work

Herne Bay Community Counselling is a registered charity. We keep our costs low so we can offer sessions at a price that reflects what you can realistically afford — not a fixed rate that excludes people on lower incomes.

When you get in touch, we will have a brief conversation about your financial situation. This is entirely confidential and non-judgemental. Based on that conversation, we will agree a session fee together.

Our sliding scale

Session fees typically range from £15 to £40 per session, based on your household income and circumstances. The table below gives a general guide.

Session feeWho this is for
£15Unwaged, benefits, or very low income
£16 – £25Part-time work or low household income
£26 – £35Full-time work on an average income
£36 – £40Higher household income or able to contribute more

These are guidelines, not rigid bands. If your situation is complicated or you are unsure, please just ask us — we will always try to find something that works.

Nobody is turned away

If even our lowest fee is beyond your means right now, please still get in touch. We have a small fund that can support people in exceptional financial hardship, and we will always do our best to find a way to help.

We ask only that you are honest with us about your circumstances. This helps us direct our limited funding to those who need it most.

Confidential

Your financial details are never shared outside of the fee-setting conversation.

Non-judgemental

We will never make you feel uncomfortable about what you can afford.

Reviewed regularly

Your fee may be adjusted if your circumstances change.

Funding & support

Charity bursary

A limited number of heavily subsidised places are available each year for people in genuine financial hardship. Ask us about availability when you get in touch.

Employee Assistance Programmes

Some employers offer a set number of free counselling sessions through an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). Check with your HR department to see whether this applies to you.

NHS referrals

In some cases your GP may be able to refer you to NHS talking therapies. We are happy to work alongside NHS provision, or to support you while you wait for an NHS appointment.

Common questions

Do I need to show proof of income?

No. We work on trust. We ask you to be honest about your circumstances, but we do not ask for payslips or benefit letters.

When do I pay?

Payment is made at the end of each session. We accept cash and bank transfer.

What if I miss a session?

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel. Sessions cancelled with less notice may be charged at the agreed rate.

Can my fee change over time?

Yes. If your financial situation changes — for better or worse — please let your counsellor know and we can review your fee together.

Not sure what you can afford?

Just get in touch. We will have a friendly, no-pressure conversation and work something out together.
